Closed-cell versus open-cell

Closed-cell runs about R-7.0 per inch, adds rigidity, resists water, and acts as its own vapour barrier. Open-cell expands further into awkward cavities, forms an air barrier at three and a half inches, damps sound, and costs less. Which one your building wants depends on the bay and the weather it faces.

Where foam earns its keep

Attics, crawl spaces, basements, cathedral ceilings, and open new-build walls. Those are the places air moves whether you want it to or not, and where a fitted batt has to leave gaps the foam expands into.
