The hardest room in the house to insulate properly

Heat collects at the top of a building and then works on the weakest surface it can find, which in most houses is the attic floor. The difficulty is that an attic is full of obstructions. Joists, wiring, ductwork and plumbing stacks all sit in the way, so anything cut to size has to be trimmed around every one of them, and every trim is a gap. That is why attics so often look insulated while performing nothing like their rated value. The fix is usually a change of product rather than more of the same: something that expands to fill, or something blown in loose to a consistent depth, does not have the gap problem by construction.

Depth is the job, not a detail of it

With blown-in cellulose especially, coverage that reads well at the hatch and thins toward the eaves is a very ordinary way for an attic to underperform, and it is invisible from the only place anybody ever looks. We install to a measured depth and check it with a rule before packing up rather than judging it by eye. If one corner is short, that corner is exactly where next winter's heat goes. We will not quote you a saving figure before seeing the space, because that number depends on your building, your fuel and the weather.
